2022/11 – Support for PIPC’s $3.5 million request to resurface Henry Hudson Drive

HHD3

Honorable Philip D. Murphy, Governor of the State of New Jersey
Honorable Kathleen Hochul, Governor of the State of New York

Dear Governors Murphy and Hochul,

We call upon you to support the Palisades Interstate Park Commission’s (“PIPC”) capital budget allocation request for $3.5 million for FY22-FY29 to resurface the scenic eight-mile long Henry Hudson Drive (the “Drive”) spanning Edgewater to Alpine.

Please know that this “naturally occurring linear park” has been a premiere destination for the region’s cyclists for decades.  Not coincidentally, it connects to the two most heavily biked roads in the U.S.: Route 9W and (via the George Washington Bridge) the Hudson Greenway.

Both states have allocated significant resources to grow active transportation. New Jersey will spend $65 million to acquire the nine-mile right-of-way needed to build the Essex-Hudson Greenway.  New York spent $200 million to complete the 750 mile Empire State Trail.  And $400 million to incorporate a bikeway across the three-mile long Mario M. Cuomo Bridge.

For a fraction of these sums, it can preserve access to this irreplaceable asset.  We therefore urge you to support the PIPC’s request.

Respectfully,

Chuck Solomon, President, Bicycle Touring Club of North Jersey
